Examining the prospect of an NBA team moving to Vegas, and what it would mean for sports betting

Even before an economic downturn devastated Las Vegas not long after this column appeared, I was always more bearish than most on the possibility of a major league sports team coming to Las Vegas. To me, the talk always seemed to involve too much smoke and too many mirrors. The subject routinely came up, though, especially once the NBA opted to conduct its All-Star Game in the city.

For sports gamblers, following the NBA is a grind.

The grueling day-to-day pace of pro basketball's long regular season engenders a sense of randomness not seen in other sports, bedeviling bettors in their quest to make predictions against the point spread.

Correcting outside media reports on football, Super Bowl wagering

Misinformation runs amok when out-of-town media report on the Las Vegas sports betting scene.

Pointing this out might seem at first like nitpicking or a symptom of showoff syndrome: Look at me, I'm a hipper-than-thou sports bettor.

It's not. Misleading or incorrect pronouncements can help create a culture of confusion, suspicion and distrust regarding legal sports wagering in Nevada.
